The way any life form responds to its environment defines its survival potential. Our
feelings mould who we are = we are our feelings.
Our feelings define
who we are. They not only identify the desirable ‘safe’ things in our lives, but also, the undesirable ‘dangerous’
things. When
things go our way, we ‘feel’ centered and secure. But when difficult situations inevitably arise and the feelings
they cause can seriously disturb our emotional balance. On those occasions when we experience ‘desirable’ feelings of comfort, safety and happiness,
our ‘feelings’ ‘attract’ us to the people, the situations and the environments, which we ‘associate
with’ those positive feelings. Similarly, when we experience ‘undesirable’ emotional pain, our feelings insist that we
get away from (or stop doing) whatever or whoever; it is that is making us feel uncomfortable, threatened and unhappy When we listen to our emotions, we become aware
of when there is a threat. Accordingly, we are able to take appropriate action, or inaction. Appropriate
anger for instance alerts us to the fact that our boundaries have been infringed. We may need to defend our position or assert
our needs more visibly. Fear is designed to protect us from danger and to guide us away from threatening situations. Grief begins the process of adjusting to a painful loss and to start the healing process. It is through our emotions
that we gradually change and grow spiritually. By staying in touch with our true selves we become more balanced and healthy
individuals. Unexpressed emotions
on the other hand never truly disappear of their own accord. Repressed emotions often express themselves physically. Many
illnesses have an emotional component that has become locked within the body. By suppressing or denying our emotions and feelings
we prevent change and become stuck and rigid as individuals. At some time in our lives
most of us experience an emotional stumbling block that we find very difficult to overcome. We suppress that emotional experience
and seek to avoid any situation that might re-kindle the pain/ hurt / grief thereby limiting our emotional and spiritual growth
as individuals. It is these emotions that the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) addresses. EFT is similar in principle
to acupuncture in that it seeks to re-balance the energy flowing through the meridians of the body in a simple and non-invasive
way. These meridians are energetic highways around the physical body that when in harmony ensure vitality and good health.
However when blockages occur as a result of disharmony at an emotional level then physical problems occur leading to illness. EFT when properly applied
removes these blockages from the energetic highways. Thereby restoring good health and vitality to the individual at an emotional
as well as a physical level. |
