Distressing events frequently rob us of emotional security. A key element of which is the emotional support of others- which has a tremendous effect upon our own self esteem.

As human beings we share a common need for people to care for, and, who care for us. These special relationships form the basis of what are called SOCIAL SUPPORT NETWORKS. These provide us with the necessary physical, emotional and other comforts which make day to day life a pleasure.

We share this support and the accompanying feelings of acceptance,  love and wellbeing with partners, members of family, friends, colleagues and others who (along with our own self esteem) provides us with our Emotional Support.

In a perfect world there are always people in everyones life whom they can turn to - when in need of someone to turn to. Not only in times of trouble, but also to share the good times with. People who when your world collapses will call you every day just to see how you are and let you know that they are concerned and care about you. The emotional support that such a network can provide by rallying around, is invaluable for anyone going through an emotional crisis. BUT THAT IS IN A PERFECT WORLD!

This is not a perfect world!  Unfortunately for countless numbers of people experiencing emotional distress; they often discover that as their distress intensifies - so their support networks shrink, and vanish. This frequently occurs when a person suffers a traumatic, life shattering event, which no member of the family, friends or others in his or her support group can relate to.

In such a situation, victims or sufferers, can find themselves emotionally abandoned and left to fend for themselves by all other members of their support groups. The effects of this type of total abandonment are cruel, devastating and have been known to trigger lethal suicidal incidents.

At this point, it would be better to accept that their life has changed and that the type of emotional support required as also changed. This is extremely difficult, but should be done for the following reasons...

It would be of the highest value to meet other people who are experiencing, or who have experienced, the same distressing event or similar. Such new acquaintances will be able to relate to your predicament. Share common experiences.  Exchange and learn new coping strategies etc. Provide each other with comfort, emotional support and empathy based understanding; which those who have not shared the experience can not.

Members of this new support network will know the same pain. Understand the same confusion. Share the same anguish and fears and as such will be able to provide each other with the all important comfort and support. Each one will be able to breathe again knowing that they are not alone: And that those around them are sharing their pain will help to reduce distressing feelings of shame, self-blame and help us to help ourselves to survive.
