There are many anxiety reduction techniques which are completely unrelated to 'pharmaceuticals'. Few of which however,
are as accessible or potentially agreeable as visualization.
It is said that a picture can paint a thousand words... This is particularly true when
it comes to Visualization. Visualization is an excellent anxiety reduction technique. It is frequently
recommended for treating general or specific anxiety, headaches, muscle tension and spasms. Reducing or eliminating pain
and in the recovery from illnesses and injuries.
In short, visualization promotes relaxation and peace of mind as well as reducing anxiety. In this respect it is a perfect
self-help wellness tool.
It works. You don't need a prescription. You can do it yourself. It is as individualistic as you are
and it's FREE
With Visualization one uses the power of one's own imagination to create a relaxing mental image to escape from a stressful
or boring situation.
This escapist image can be developed into a full blown self-indulgent
fantasy. One which makes you feel good about yourself whenever you
visualise it.
Once you can do this, you can control
your own emotions... You experience negative feelings, you visualise something which makes you feel good
- and you feel good. You have changed a negative feeling into a positive feeling
and now you feel good.
Being able to control your emotions, you are able to alter your emotions. Being able to alter your emotions, means
that you are also able to change your feelings. Changing your bodily feelings will alter your bodily sensations.
This can relieve, or possibly even, eliminate anxiety symptoms.
The next step I found after visualization was Guided Visualization. But this seems to involve selling 'images' to people, which I find a little disturbing. So I
thought that I would try and produce one myself.
Imagine...
The rain beats against your window as the church clock strikes midnight. Banks of candles flicker in the dimly
lit room in which you slowly recline into the relaxing warmth of a jacuzzi. Soft music soothes away the stress and
strains of the day, and a fine aroma fills the room and excites your senses. Rose petals drift on the gently bubbling steamy
surface of the water, and both bubbles and petals tickle when they make contact with your body. You squirm with pleasure.
The experience is teasing all of your senses.
You close your eyes and feel the steaming heat of the water embrace you. The comforting warmth of the water, and
the the sensuous touch of gentle bubbles wash away all discomfort. All you feel is a beautiful warm contentment. Nothing
else exists except the self indulgent glow of your own contentment... and you smile... and snooze....
Hey, it really works. I'm dropping off already.
So. When you are feeling 'zoned out', disembodied, remote, distant, removed etc: Visualise. This will raise the mind's
focus from oneself, and feelings of anxiety should abate.
Photographs are said to be a real aid to visualization. Accordingly, I've added a special photographic feature....
Try a ten minute 'chillout': Simply relax in peace and quiet and try to clear the clutter from your mind by visualising
yourself in any of the scenes provided...
