Physical injuries can be extremely painful, but they
are visible, and so treatable. Mental and emotional wounds can be far more severe because they are not always obvious. A broken
arm can be set - but a broken heart can’t.
Generally, health service professionals are ill-equipped
to deal with our emotional problems. It is only when our emotional
distress becomes a debilitating condition that is diagnosable (as being a mental health condition) that we become treatable.
The purpose of the emotional first aid kit is to
look at a number of simple methods of dealing with emotional distress before it becomes
debilitating.
